Bitumens are a constituent of asphalt and tar. Asphalt is a complex mixture of thousands of compounds. One of the main constituents of asphalt are bitumens which either occur naturally or are a residue from the petroleum oil refining process. The bitumens in asphalt act as the glue or the binder.
Bitumen is actually the liquid binder that holds asphalt together. The term bitumen is often mistakenly used to describe asphalt. A bitumen-sealed road has a layer of bitumen sprayed and then covered with an aggregate. This is then repeated to give a two-coat seal.
